Your consultant will have discussed the types of anaesthesia available. Foot surgery in our practice is either undertaken as a day-case procedure, or with a one-night stay, and you have a choice of either general anaesthetic or local anaesthetic.

With a general anaesthetic you will be asleep during the procedure and before the operation you will not be allowed to eat or drink for around 6 hours before.

Many patients now choose a local anaesthetic which involves an injection behind the knee or ankle to completely block the pain. This means you will be awake throughout the operation. Some patients choose to take sedatives so they are completely relaxed. Having a local anaesthetic does also mean you can avoid feelings of nausea and drowsiness often associated with general anaesthetic.
